CASLIS Mentoring Program

Background

Plans for the CASLIS mentoring program began in February 2008 with the intention of offering new or recently graduated librarians or library technicians with the unique opportunity of pairing up with an experienced special librarian or library technician who could act as a guide and advisor.

What is the CASLIS Mentoring Program?

The CASLIS Mentoring program is a formal process whereby the mentoring committee pairs a mentor or trusted advisor with a new librarian or library technician with the goal of providing professional development, growth, and support to this individual.

The mentoring program can also be adapted to fit the needs of librarians and library technicians from other sectors wishing to enter the special libraries field.  In addition, the program has the flexibility to provide individuals with specific services tailored to their needs.  Such services might include resume reviewing or interview preparation.

Goals

  • Provide a facilitated mentoring program to all CASLIS members
  • Assist both new and seasoned librarians and library technicians in achieving their career goals
  • Develop trusting professional relationships among special librarians and library technicians
  • Foster individual and mutual professional interests and aspirations
  • Encourage intergenerational cooperation and healthy workplaces

Length of the Program

CASLIS recognizes that mentoring relationships often result in ties and connections that remain long after the formal relationship has come to a close. However, for the purposes of goal setting and for establishing expectations, it is recommended that the mentor and mentee agree upon a one or two year time frame for the mentoring relationship.

Disclaimer

Members of the Mentoring Committee are committed to assisting individuals in the mentoring program with whatever problems may arise.  The Committee will handle concerns of the mentors or mentees in a timely manner and with respect and consideration.  The mentor or mentee can request that the Committee dissolve the relationship and/or create a new match should they feel their expectations are not being met.
