Subject: National Consultations on Copyright Modernization
Date: July 21st, 2009
The purpose of this memo is to highlight the Government of Canada’s recent announcement of the Official Launch of the National Consultations on Copyright Modernization.
On July 20th, 2009, Minister of Industry Tony Clement, and Minister of Canadian Heritage James Moore officially launched nationwide consultations to solicit Canadians’ opinions on the important issue of copyright.
The Ministers highlighted the Government’s awareness of Canadians’ concerns with copyright and its implications on the digital environment. Their goal is to provide all Canadians with a chance to express their views and concerns on how the government should approach the modernization of copyright legislation.
The consultations will run until September 13th, 2009. The Government hopes to introduce modern and responsive copyright legislation this coming fall. Components of the consultations will include an online discussion forum, as well as a submission centre for posting detailed submissions.
In addition, several round table discussions are being planned to be held across Canada, in which experts and key organizations will be participating.
CLA is participating in the Calgary Round Table Discussion on July 21st. The round tables will be recorded, and will be available online for download in both official languages.
The CLA Copyright Working Group is coordinating CLA’s submissions and representation for the various stages of the consultation process.
CLA will keep you informed as we move forward on this file, providing you with continuous updates and guidelines on how you can get involved!
