  • a national library association, founded in 1946 and representing institutional and personal members from across Canada and outside of Canada;
  • institutional members are primarily libraries and commercial members.  Commercial members are those companies who supply goods and services to the library and information community;
  • personal members (individuals) including the staff and boards of public, college and university, special and school libraries, as well as employees of commercial members;
  • a leader among library organizations in Canada, serving as monitor and advocate on key political and economic issues that affect libraries and library staff. CLA/ACB advises and represents its members on issues such as copyright, taxation on books, information policy and censorship;

The Canadian Library Association/Association canadienne des bibliothèques is governed by an elected executive council.
