CLTA NEWS
September 30, 2008
On
Friday September 12, 2008 your CLTA executive held its mid-year meeting
in Ottawa prior to the weekend meeting of your CLA Executive
Council. Betty Thomas,
Vice President/President Elect from Halifax, Elaine Kivisto,
Secretary/Treasurer from Regina and Director at Large
Darryl Lucke also from Regina and I (Jan Harder) from
Ottawa were present. As CLTA President, I am also a member of the CLA
Council.
As you know, in late
spring 2008, post CLA 2008 Vancouver, we approached all Public Library
Trustees asking that all complete a review of the CLTA constitution and
recommend any changes to it. Your executive discussed this input and drafted changes, which
will be forwarded to you this fall.
As well, we discussed our 2008 and 2009 goals –
communications, provincial advisory council, advocacy, and
membership. We want
all Public Library Trustees in Canada to know that the CLTA is their
advocate at the national level.
As members of your CLTA
executive, we are looking forward to attending as many provincial
association conferences as we can.
We believe that between the four of us, if we use our
geography strategically, we should be able to join you to listen, share
and plan together. We
are looking for your ideas, Trustees!
As you know CLA 2009 is in Montreal, a truly cosmopolitan
City, and your CLTA will see that all Canadian public library trustees
will have opportunities to meet, learn, share and have fun. I guarantee that you will
absolutely enjoy CLA Montreal 2009.
It is never too soon to think
about candidates for CLTA awards. Check the CLA website www.cla.cafor details and deadlines for the award
categories. CLA
President Ken Roberts is developing a great closing to Montreal CLA with
a slide show of “people in libraries” across
Canada. Put your
thinking caps on and pick out your best library photo action shots. Send
them to barbara.clubb@biblioottawalibrary.caelectronically as j-peg
files.
Finally, I want to make
sure that all library trustees are up to date on copyright. CLA has
posted its Brief
Unlocking the Public Interest-September 2008 on the now defunct Bill 6-61. It is available at
http://tinyurl.com/54olyq
Make sure that you and
your chief librarian review this complex and very important document at
an upcoming board meeting. While the Bill may be defunct, the issue is very much alive and
as boards we need to be ready when it is introduced into the new
parliament.
