Memorial University of Newfoundland invites applications for a permanent tenure-track appointment in the University Library System.

Humanities Research Liaison Librarian (History)
Queen Elizabeth II Library

The person we want to hire:

Memorial University is looking for an energetic and highly motivated librarian with a strong service orientation who enjoys interacting with people, planning library services and shaping its collection of resources.  The individual should be committed to a reflective professional practice that identifies needs, creates new solutions, and involves both team and individual working styles.

We encourage applications from librarians who are attracted to an evolving workplace that strives to meet changing user needs and the long term requirements of research and scholarship, who have a masters degree in library and information science from an ALA
-accredited graduate program, and who have advanced academic subject qualifications specifically in history. Since our future will be defined by emerging technologies, familiarity with the current state of information technology and commitment to keep abreast of it are also needed. Previous experience in collection development and/or library instruction and/or reference work are desirable assets, as is experience or familiarity with statistical methods and the application of information technology in medium-sized to large academic libraries.  Knowledge of French or German would also be an asset.

What your responsibilities will be:

The successful candidate will assume responsibility for liaison with the Department of History with possible additional responsibility for collecting in other minor arts areas.  In the future some modification to the areas of responsibilities may be possible to accommodate both a candidate's special strength in another subject area and library needs.  Liaison includes regular contact with faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, the identification of disciplinary needs and the promotion of library resources in the area.  The appointee will be responsible for collection development in these areas and may be asked to assume temporary responsibility for other areas.  The appointee will also take part in the library’s instructional program, delivering instructional services to students at all levels in a wide variety of disciplines, as well as participating in delivering general reference services.  Some evening and weekend work is required.  The appointee will report to the Head of Information Services and the Head of Collection Development.

Who we are:

The Queen Elizabeth II Library is the largest branch of a highly centralized library system.  It is the primary service point for all disciplines on the St. John’s campus except for the health sciences.  Memorial’s librarians are forward-looking and dedicated professionals, committed to high standards of service.  Our mission is to support the University’s research and teaching agenda and student success at all levels.  With a complement of 30 professional librarians and 100 support staff, the Library has an annual materials expenditure of $6.5 million.  This Library is growing and evolving rapidly.  Challenges in the changing environment will make the next decade an exciting time to test assumptions about the style and content of professional practice.  For more details about us see http://www.library.mun.ca

Benefits:

This is a tenure-track appointment.  An appointment at the rank of Librarian I or II is anticipated.  Salary floors as of August 31, 2009, are $46,391 and $53,107 for Librarian I and II respectively. Increases in these floors are awaiting ratification. Actual salary will recognise experience and qualifications. Memorial offers this position, as part of the bargaining unit, with standard academic benefits including provision of time for research and professional development.  For more details see http://www.mun.ca/munfa/CA2007-09.pdf.
