CACUL Standards in Higher Education Task Force -- Overview
The Task Force was established by the CACUL Executive in 2006
following the receipt of a report on the ACRL statement of standards and
the potential Canadian response to them. The report criticized the 2004
ACRL statement on three major grounds:
- Lacks internal consistency,
- Is dated in its approach, and
- Does not recognize existing standards
As an American document, it fails to recognize the role of regional
and national consortia that typify the Canadian context.
In its first two years, the Task Force has assembled a list of existing
standards and adopted a definition of standard. In order to ensure that
the Task Force’s work speaks directly to the needs of Canadian
academic librarians, the Task Force has created a blog for
discussion of issues related to standards and guidelines. These
discussions will guide the Task force in choosing individual issues to
address and will give the academic librarian community a chance to
comment on the draft documents.
In the interim, the Task Force has created a "Toolbox" containing
links to existing standards that are applicable to academic libraries
and librarians. Each of these standards has been vetted by its own
organization, so they vary in format and content. It is up to each
librarian to choose from this array those that appear most
appropriate. Enjoy.
