Balancing Acts

I have been thinking a lot lately about my school/work/life balance - and realizing that there is really no balance at all right now. School and work are fighting for priority and life is a very distant third.

I made a conscious decision at the beginning of this school year to become more involved in student associations and committee work, so I got myself elected to a couple of executives and appointed to several committees. I have been swamped with meetings, organizing events, attending others, and making butter tarts for bake sales!

Add to that one job that is for career-related work experience and another job that pays the bills. Further add my class time and school assignments, which should really be my highest priority, and I'm a little busy!

I think I bit off more than I can chew, and it is definitely my regular life, my social life, my time for relaxation that suffers.

My questions then are these: How does everyone else do it? Or do you?

Do you actually have a balanced life, or is this unrealistic to expect as a student or a new professional trying to make your mark?

How do you cope?

After being asked, "How do you maintain such a heavy workload?" at a recent session I attended on work/life balance, a colleague of mine said, in joking sincerity, "embrace mediocrity."

I found that it's easier to maintain a balance since I started my first professional position. A lot of the committee work and meetings that take up so much time as a student become part of your job. Plus, you should (hopefully) be earning enough that the job that gives you professional experience also pays the bills! My supervisor actually told me that she expected me to maintain a life/work balance. It's part of my job expectations!

That being said, my partner lives (literally) on the other side of the country so that part of my personal life really doesn't get in the way! (This is not a strategy I recommend.)

So I have something to look forward to then! Thanks Deborah, I feel a little more encouraged. :)
