Year End Round Up

As 2007 nears its end, I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on my first six months as an academic librarian. I was lucky enough to get my dream starting position in July. I wasn't sure what to expect. Would I know how to "properly" answer a reference question? Would I be able to clearly explain what a Boolean operator was to a room full of first year students? Would my co-workers like me? Would I like them? Would I be able to properly manage a collections budget that almost equals my salary? After my first six months, I feel much more confident in my ability to answer (almost) any reference question; I'm constantly working on making sure my students not only understand Boolean operators, but can use them properly. I like most of my co-workers and I think they like me too! And, I'm discovering it's a lot of fun to spend serious money on "serious" books. I still feel like I have lots of things to learn in my new position, but I'm looking forward to exploring other aspects of my position in 2008.

With that in mind, Re:Generations would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday! We'll all be back in the New Year with more questions, opinions, and ideas on and about academic librarianship.
