Stacey Whittington, 'Library Ninja,' Rockwood Centennial Public School, Ontario

Why I love my job

  • I get to help children love books.
  • I get children interested in reading.
  • I get to read a book to a captive audience (they're never more captive than when they're in school) and ask them to THINK about what they are hearing or seeing.
  • Conversely, I get to read a book to a captive audience and TELL them NOT to think about what they are seeing or hearing.
  • I get to see a smile brighter than the sun when a student really GETS a book.
  • I get to connect kids with real ROLE MODELS.
  • I get kids to open up about what they want to do, what they feel and let LOOSE! (This ain't your Grandma's library anymore; in here we make some NOISE!)
  • I teach respect for books, respect for self, respect for others. I take students on adventures without leaving the room.
  • I make kids ask WHY? And then I help them find the answer.

Why I chose a career in libraries

I have fostered a love of stories and books since my kindergarten days, in fact I think I came out of the womb leafing through a copy The Hobbit. After graduating from Teacher's College I found out that to get to the higher pay scale you had to take additional courses. When I saw that School Librarianship was one of them it was already decided for me which course I would take. I have just finished my first year as a Teacher-Librarian and I can't imagine not doing this job. There is no greater job in the world than turning people on to reading. And I get PAID to do it. How do you beat that? Simple. You don't.
