Mike Sainsbury, Librarian, Greater Victoria Public Library

Why I love my job

Everyone is welcome in the public library. I love that statement. The community's interests and tastes are reflected in the library's books, magazines, movies and music. I love that, too. But I especially love helping hundreds of people each week answer questions they couldn't answer alone. I remove obsolete books from our shelves and order new ones to better serve our users. I read books and articles about libraries. I bring new ideas to my little corner of this very old profession. My favourite thing about being a librarian is knowing that everything I do makes it easier for others to find the information they need -- or maybe just the DVD they want.

Why I chose a career in libraries

People are often overwhelmed with information. Entertainment, which should be fun, becomes a major decision-making process. Ideally, libraries should help people find the book they need or the movie they want. But too often, a borrower just feels lost, overwhelmed, or stupid when they walk through our doors. I chose a career in libraries to make library services more responsive to user needs. I want to create systems that empower library users, rather than hanging on to those that maintain the librarian's role as a deskbound know-it-all. I want to make it easy for people to find what they want. I want to work some library magic!
